Pretty Cure to run on YTV in early 2009
Submitted on December 16th, 2008.
I don’t know if I should be happy or sad about it. Hopefully it was not localized as you could guess in this article.
If I can have uncut DVD’s I will be happy.
EDIT: I think this is fantastic news. Even if it does wind up being localized a little bit, it’s a great program to be run for younger audiences in earlier hours. Almost brings things full circle with Sailor Moon’s initial success. – Pep
New anime on Super Channel in December (no, this isn’t good news)
Submitted on December 7st, 2008. It looks like Super Channel 2 will be making some controversial additions to its (probably brokered) Manga Entertainment-fueled anime block beginning Monday, December 8. According to their schedule:
December 1 at 9:00PM (EST) – Vampire Wars
December 1 at 10:00PM (EST) – Psychic Wars
December 8 at 9:00PM (EST) - Canadian Premier of Gurren Lagann
December 8 at 10:00PM (EST) – Now and Then, Here and Now
December 8 at 10:30PM (EST) – Descendants of Darkness
Does this mean Bandai Entertainment sold the Canadian rights to both Gurren Lagann (and in all likelihood Gundam 00) to Manga Entertainment? If so, we can safely place a considerable amount of blame on Bandai for the massive decline of anime on stations people actually get (ie: YTV).
Not only is Super Channel a premium station, but most subscribers aren’t even allowed to pay for the service directly. Thanks to the inability for competition between premium stations, you’ll need to pay for Super Channel on top of Movie Central or TMC. If you have digital cable through either Shaw or Rogers, Super Channel is offering a free preview of its HD channels throughout December. Anyone without HD is out of lucky.
Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser’s Teaser Streamed
posted on 2008-12-14 02:01 EST
The official website for the Detective Conan anime franchise’s films has posted a teaser trailer for the 13th film, Meitantei Conan: Shikkoku no Chaser (Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser), on Saturday. Like the previous films and the ongoing television series, this film adapts Gosho Aoyama’s popular shōnen manga about a brilliant detective trapped in a child’s body. Detective Shinichi Kudo will once again face the elusive Kuro-zukume (Men in Black) for their “fated showdown.” The film will open on April 18, 2009.Viz Media is releasing the original manga in North America under the name Case Closed, and FUNimation Entertainment shipped DVDs for the television anime adaptation.
Live action Manga to spoof U.S TV’s 24 Show in Japan
Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The February issue of Takeshobo’s Manga Life magazine has announced on Wednesday that it will publish a “live-action four-panel manga” spoof of the American suspense television series, 24. The television series, which depicts the longest days in the life of America’s Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer, has been a popular hit in Japan thanks to dubbed airings of the first six seasons. Manabu Kishi of the Dokidoki Camp comedy duo has been doing impressions of Jack Bauer (specifically, Rikiya Koyama’s dubbing of Kiefer Sutherland’s character) for several years. The Manga Life magazine promises, tongue-in-cheek, that Dokidoki Camp no Bakshō 24 (Dokidoki Camp’s Hilarious 24) manga’s “panels will run in real-time” in the next issue on January 17. Beside dubbing American films and television series, Koyama has voiced the title character in Kamen no Maid Guy, Ippo’s sparring partner Takamura in Hajime no Ippo, and the main lead Hakuoro in Utawarerumono. Years before Jack Bauer brought him back into the spotlight, Sutherland voiced the detective Russ Sylibus in the Armitage III Polymatrix anime film.
Read or Die Director Masunari’s 1st Film in the Works
Tomonori Ochikoshi, the head of A-1 Pictures‘ production group, has revealed that director Koji Masunari (Read or Die, Kamichu!) is still working with the company on his first theatrical film. The January issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Newtype magazine, which was released on December 10, published Ochikoshi’s comment in its feature about anime productions in the new year. Newtype had reported this past February that Masunari was working with his core R.O.D. Read or Die team of writer Hideyuki Kurata and character designer Masashi Ishihama on a 2008 adventure film that was tentatively titled The Uchū Show (The Space Show). Ochikoshi did not say in the current Newtype issue if The Uchū Show is still in production, or if the ongoing Masunari film project is a separate work.VIZ Media and Warner Home Video Forge Distribution Alliance

San Francisco, CA, and Burbank, CA, December 17, 2008 – Viz Media, LLC (Viz Media) and Warner Home Video (WHV) have reached agreement for the home entertainment distribution in the United States and Mexico of new and catalog DVD releases from Viz Media. The announcement was jointly made by Hidemi Fukuhara, President and CEO of Viz Media and Jeff Brown, WHV Executive Vice President and General Manager, TV, Family and Animation.
Effective April 1, 2009, WHV will be the exclusive home entertainment distributor for new and catalog DVD content based on well-known franchises such as NARUTO, BLEACH, DEATH NOTE and INUYASHA as well as the POKÉMON animated television series and catalog features. Viz Media is one of the leading purveyors of Japanese animated content (anime) and manga (graphic novel) publishing in North America. Viz Media is one of the largest U.S. studios in the non-theatrical anime DVD segment and has played a major role in helping anime gain widespread mainstream popularity.
A leader in the video distribution industry, over the years WHV has successfully signed agreements with content owners of some of the world’s most renowned brands including BBC, National Geographic, Peanuts, Dr. Seuss, Popeye, American Girl, Cartoon Network, Leap Frog, Scholastic, The Wiggles, NFL, NBA and NHL. Other perennial animated properties in the Warner Bros. library include Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Hanna Barbera, Scooby-Doo, Batman, Superman and all of the other DC Comics characters.
Regarding the announcement, Mr. Fukuhara remarked, “We look forward to joining forces with Warner Home Video and are confident that in working with their strength in sales and distribution, we will continue to grow the anime category even more effectively than we have over the last several years. We’re very encouraged by Warner Home Video’s enthusiasm for this category and our properties and look forward to our titles reaching an even wider audience as a result of this relationship.”
Brown added, “The association between Warner Home Video and Viz Media demonstrates our continued commitment to the growing sector of anime. Adding to our previous success with The Animatrix and Appleseed: Ex Machina, we are looking forward to a successful relationship with Viz Media, one of the top players in the anime genre and children’s animation.”
